TOM House
Artist-in-Residence Program
Frequently Asked Questions and Application Process
Who is this residency for?
Tom of Finland Foundation’s Artist-in-Residence Program (ToFF AiR) provides time, resources, and inspiration to a new generation of LGBTQ+ artists. Valuing originality, the residency represents an opportunity for Queer artists to reconnect with themselves and their exploratory practice so as to discover new creative horizons free of censorship. We encourage projects that engage with LGBTQ+ themes, exploring concepts of sexuality and identity, and celebrate the legacy of Tom of Finland (without copying his work).
What kind of support is provided to resident artists?
Artists-in-residence have access to Tom of Finland Foundation’s extensive archives and library, the mentorship of Foundation’s staff and networks, and opportunities for public engagement. Artists-in-residence can choose to work in their bedrooms or use outdoor studio space (available on a first-come, first-served basis). At this time, Foundation cannot provide financial support; however, other artists have used the opportunity of the ToFF AiR to apply for applicable grants and awards. Artists-in-residence are responsible for purchasing all related supplies/exhibition materials, as well as paying a monthly rental fee for the room in which they reside.
What accommodations are available for artists-in-residence?

What is it like living at TOM House and do I have complete privacy?
Being an artist-in-residence at TOM House provides you the opportunity to live and work in a communal setting, much like Tom and Durk did in the 1980s. Each artist-in-residence has a private bedroom but shares one full bathroom and one half bath. Three other people live at TOM House full-time: Durk, Sharp and Loyalty with our cat, Pearl. Please keep in mind that TOM House has two-and-a-half stories, and all bedrooms are located on the second floor. TOM House is a historic landmark and is not ADA compliant. For any accessibility questions please contact residency@tomoffinland.org
Six days a week, there are full-time staff and volunteers on site and artists-in-residence will encounter visitors and tours of TOM House regularly. Part of the experience is our daily group lunch that brings together artists, staff, volunteers and guests. After business hours, TOM House is quiet and a communal dinner is often served nightly (for a small fee). Artists-in-residence are encouraged to engage with the Foundation community and participate in monthly exhibitions and events on, and off, site.
May I bring my dog / cat with me?
Unfortunately, we cannot allow any pets. Please contact residency@tomoffinland.org to discuss if you have a registered service animal.
May I have guests?
Artists-in-residence may arrange to have models, friends and family visit for a short stay. Since this is a communal living environment, we request that artists-in-residence be respectful of fellow housemates and be mindful of their security and safety. Long-term guests are decided on a case-by-case basis and at Foundation’s discretion.
