Jimminy Cricket, Sex Demon, 16mm on HD video, 60min., 1975
Screening for the first time since 1981 on a New 2K Preservation Scan!
In Person, Evan Purchell

“Not even an Exorcist could help!” when a gay man’s younger lover becomes possessed by the cursed medallion he bought him from a Christopher Street antique store in Jimminy Cricket’s 1975 film, SEX DEMON. An “exotic!! erotic!!” all-male take on both The Exorcist and its Blaxploitation copycat, Abby, SEX DEMON is a delirious combination of thrills, chills, and uh, dangerous uses of a screwdriver.

SEX DEMON was the first film effort by Jimminy Cricket, a dancer and manager at New York’s legendary Gaiety Male Burlesk, which features prominently in the film. He’d eventually move over to Broadway’s Big Top Theatre, where he directed live shows and films under the name Linus Terri before cofounding the weekly gay public-access morning show, Gay Morning America. Cricket passed away from AIDS-related complications in 1992.

Last screened theatrically in 1981 and never given a home video release, SEX DEMON is a crucial — yet long-lost — piece of queer horror history. Presented in a new 2k preservation from a recently discovered 16mm theatrical print.

Ask Any Buddy is a feature-length video, Instagram feed (Artforum ‘Best of 2018’) + Podcast. Using fragments from 126 theatrical feature films spanning the years 1968-1986, creator Evan Purchell weaves a kaleidoscopic day in the life snapshot of urban gay culture in the era — or at least how it looked in the movies. From casual tearoom cruising to actual police raids, Ask Any Buddy uses rare footage shot at dozens of real bathhouses, bars, movie theaters, pride parades and legendary hotspots like New York’s West Side Piers to explore both the sex film genre’s unique blend of fantasy and reality and its role in documenting a subculture that was just starting to come into visibility in the years immediately following the Stonewall Riots. Ask Any Buddy was created by Evan Purchell, a film historian whose work on the subject has led to collaborations with Dark Entries Records, Dirty Looks, and Vinegar Syndrome. He is currently conducting research for an upcoming book on the history of the gay adult film industry.
