Pop-up exhibition

TOM OF FINLAND (Touko Laaksonen, Finnish, 1920 – 1991), Untitled, 1985, Pen and ink on paper, ©1985-2020 Tom of Finland Foundation

A selection of posters designed by Tom for his own fetish club.

The subject and grateful audience of Tom of Finland’s production was and still is the community of fetish men who surrounded him. The Finnish, Nordic, European and international world of leather and fetish men served as the source of inspiration from which Tom drew ideas for his production.

Tom’s own club was the Finnish MSC Finland – TOM’s Club, founded in 1976. Still spanning six different decades of an active club, the sky is a breathtaking cavalcade of interesting artists and visual storytellers. The club’s early decade posters were largely made in Tom’s own studio.

The show features the processing stages of three different posters. When making posters, Tom was characterized by a recurrence familiar from pop art. The opportunities created by the reprotechnics of his era are reflected in his way of working. In the process of creating three different posters, the world under the hood changes, but gradually, and always adding something to the new work.

The works should be seen closeup to discover what is the artist’s original new creative pen work, what is the print that has become of the print. The line between the work and the copy is blurred.

All are original Tom, everything is fetish aesthetic visuals made for MSC.
