Join us in New York for a discussion on Tom of Finland’s life, work, and cultural impact, featuring Nayland Blake, Durk Dehner, Claire Gilman, and Brontez Purnell. The discussion will be followed by an opening reception at 6:30p for Tom of Finland: Highway Patrol, Greasy Rider, and Other Selected Works, an exhibition of collages and drawings, including a full suite of rarely exhibited panels from the series Kake vol. 22 – “Greasy Rider” (1978) and Kake vol. 22 – “Highway Patrol” (1980).
Tom of Finland has long been recognized as a great visual innovator of the twentieth century. A masterful draftsman and prolific artist, Tom produced an expressive and extensive body of work in which masculine, empowered gay men are fully engulfed in intimate moments of unabashed ecstasy. Tom reveled in the entire rendering process, from the transformative immediacy of collage-making to the narrative development and sketching of his more elaborate pen and ink drawings.
In this program, Durk Dehner, Cofounder of Tom of Finland Foundation, will touch on Tom’s lasting influence across society and generations of gay communities. Artists Nayland Blake and Brontez Purnell will speak to Tom’s impact on punk culture and aesthetics, as well as on their own writing and artistic practices. Claire Gilman, Chief Curator at The Drawing Center in New York, will provide further formal context to Tom’s drawings and their relevance to twentieth century art history. The panel will be moderated by Julie Niemi, Communications Manager, David Kordansky Gallery.
This panel discussion is organized in conjunction with the exhibition, Tom of Finland: Highway Patrol, Greasy Rider, and Other Selected Works.
Tom of Finland: Threesome, a new publication examining Tom’s work within an art historical context and documenting three exhibitions held at David Kordansky Gallery between 2015 and 2021, will be available for purchase during the event and the run of the exhibition.
