Music researcher Anna-Elena Pä äkkölä is responsible for the script and artistic design of the concert \, who has chosen important music for Laaksonen\, who is also known as a l eading pianist\, and important turning points in the artist's life. Actor Eric Barco reads letters by Touko Laaksonen\, and the narrator is actor Mi iko Toiviainen. The concert will be introduced by Mayor Harri Virta. Parts of the concert ensemble have been recorded in cities that are important t o Tom of Finland: Kaarina\, Turku and Helsinki.\n\n\n\nTouko's father comp osed music and directed a mixed choir and his mother encouraged the young boy with his piano lessons. \n\nAfter the war Touko went back to school. There was no more waffling between art and music: he chose both\, studying music during the day and advertising at night. He had been accepted at th e famed Sibelius Academy. Thus he voluntarily doubled the class load that once\, in 1939\, had seemed so onerous. What’s more\, even before his sc hooling was complete\, Tom was taking on advertising jobs and playing pian o for a cocktail lounge. So Touko Laaks onen\, as he was named on his birth certificate\, worked for a long time u nder the radar. The artist that would become world-famous under the name T om of Finland was called Touko in his homeland by his family\, his close f riends there called him Tom or Tommi.\n\nEarly on he started to take and d evelop the photographic portraits that he himself called reference-picture s\, in his own darkened simple home-studio and darkroom – having them de veloped elsewhere would be risking a prison sentence. This is where the st ory of Tom of Finland starts\, and now in this exhibition we meet a new un known side of his work\, 100 years after his birth.\n“This never before shown treasure trove of images gives a deeper insight into how Tom's skill fully drawn super-macho men were created. Each drawing could consist of se veral references from several different photographs. The drawings show the men always full of confidence\, and always ready\, since Tom of Finland's art\, for him\, wasn't about problematising\, but about desire and the ri ght to express it”\, says Berndt Arell who curates the exhibition togeth er with Fotografiska's exhibition producer Jessica Jarl.\nJessica Jarl des cribes the work with the exhibition as an inspiring journey that's given l onging a face. Sometimes they were d ressed in suits\, sometimes nothing at all. Jones has produced a genre-defying body of work that includes films\, videos\, photographs\, and texts. He alternately employs research\, critiq ue\, autobiography\, fiction\, and appropriation to offer bracing - and of ten controversial - reassessments of the historical record. The Fall of Co mmunism as Seen in Gay Pornography (1998) is an important video from a mom ent in Jones's career when he was beginning to leave behind the world of i ndependent documentary cinema for a more free-wheeling practice that exist ed - and continues to exist - at the margins between several disciplines. It is comprised entirely of footage from gay adult videos made in Eastern Europe in the first years after the arrival of capitalism.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nThe motivations of the boys who appear in The Fall of Communism… are at once simpler and more complex than those of the swells who appear in Wa rhol’s Screen Tests. Of course\, as one hapless subject says in my video \, it’s all done “for the money.” But among male prostitutes\, that ’s the oldest line in the book. At least some of the boys were looking f or a good time. Others thought they might satisfy their curiosity about W estern capitalist perverts\, ideally finding a sugar daddy one day\, and i n doing so\, they would escape their dreary surroundings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\ n\n\n\n\n\nPerhaps a few of these kids had no idea whatsoever about what t hey were getting themselves into. Searching for clues in the looks on thei r faces is a pointless task. They are quite opaque\, and that mystery\, fo r me\, is one of the best parts of the material. Still spanning six different decades of an active club\, the sky is a breathtaking cavalcade of interes ting artists and visual storytellers. The club’s early decade posters w ere largely made in Tom’s own studio.\n\nThe show features the processin g stages of three different posters. When making posters\, Tom was charact erized by a recurrence familiar from pop art. The opportunities created b y the reprotechnics of his era are reflected in his way of working. In th e process of creating three different posters\, the world under the hood c hanges\, but gradually\, and always adding something to the new work.\n\nT he works should be seen closeup to discover what is the artist’s origina l new creative pen work\, what is the print that has become of the print. Ten best proposals were presented first in the Sideways festival in mid-June and then at the Eurogames on Kansalaist ori square in Helsinki in late June – early July 2016. The cofounder and president of Tom of Finland Foundation\, Durk Dehner\, acted as the head of the jury.\n\n[caption id="attachment_49784" align="aligncenter" width=" 250"] CONTEST[/caption]\n\nThe three best proposals were presented to the board of directors of the housing cooperative Sampsa in early spring 2020. Amongst the proposals Sampsa chose the memorial plaque designed by the 47 -years-old graphic designer Matu Kormano. It depicts a familiar masculine figure in profile by the late iconic artist and bears his famous signature .
