SUMMARY:RYAN DAVIS "Muses\, Lovers\, & In-Between"
DESCRIPTION:Muses\, Lovers\, and In-Between by Ryan Davis is a visual study of intimacy and vulnerability\, exploring gender codes and kink through the lens of fashion. The work moves between masculinity and femininity\, hardness and softness—finding strength in vulnerability. It does not seek to subvert masculinity in disgrace\, but to honor its tenderness\, creating space for Queer POC bodies who hold both with unapologetic grace. \nThis visual diary traces the shifting relationship between lover and muse through the lens of voyeur and exhibitionist\, revealing moments of tension\, submission\, and desire. The exhibition debuts the ongoing series Ethereal Intimacy. \nNorman in Hose\, 2025\, Instant photography \n  \n \n  \n \n \n  \nOPENING RECEPTION 6TH NOVEMBER | 6-9p \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nOn view through 22nd November. SUMMARY:ŁUKASZ LEJA "Luke of Poland"
DESCRIPTION:ON VIEW BY APPOINTMENT +1 213 250 1685\nCLOSING RECEPTION 31st August 4–7p \n\nThe final exhibition by our Artist-in-Residence Łukasz Leja.\nLuke of Poland takes inspiration from Queer artists of the past who created erotic works under pseudonyms—often an Anglicized first name paired with the place they were from or worked in—to protect themselves from public scrutiny\, exposure\, and legal persecution. “Luke” is Łukasz’s own alter ego\, a persona through which he’s free to explore kinks and ideas that today’s art climate often suppresses\, disregards\, and censors.  \n \nThe exhibition features ten new oil-on-canvas paintings\,\nphotography prints created with Richie Lee Davis\, \na zine-based photo project\, \nand originals and reproductions of earlier works. \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nDuring his 3-month residency\, Łukasz has lived in TOM House and had access to resources\, including the world’s largest library and archive of erotic art. Founded in the 1984 \, the Foundation was established to promote\, preserve\, and celebrate erotic art. Over 40 years\, it has expanded to include international erotic art festivals and the Artist-in-Residence Program. \nThe show’s title pays homage to a lineage of artists—like Tom of Finland\, Bruce of Los Angeles\, and Martin of Holland\, among countless others—who\, in eras when erotic art was criminalized\, created groundbreaking work under pseudonyms. By acknowledging the rich history of erotic arts\, Luke of Poland explores Łukasz’s personal ideas\, memories\, and kink. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nINSTALLATION PHOTOS BY \nFERNANDO GUERRERO\n \nAVAILABLE WORKS \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTOM HOUSE IS ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET IN ECHO PARK SO WE STRONGY ENCOURGE RIDE-SHARE OR PUBLIC TRANSPORT.\n\n\n\n\nWelcome Łukasz!\n Welcome to the Artist-in-Residence program Łukasz Leja! SUMMARY:ÉAMON McGIVERN "Legible to Desire"
DESCRIPTION:ON VIEW THROUGH 11th August\nBY APPOINTMENT ONLY: +1 213 250 1685\nEAMON McGIVERN Raoul Bejerano\, 2025 \n\n\nTom of Finland Foundation is proud to present Legible to Desire\, a new exhibition of paintings by current artist-in-residence Éamon McGivern. The series of oil paintings is based on original and archival photographs made and discovered at TOM House during his residency. \n\n\nIf you are familiar with Tom of Finland’s work you may recognize some of the faces within the paintings in this show. About half of the paintings are based on photographs of Tom’s friends and lovers here in L.A. I am fascinated by the vast gap between the photographic images of these men and the fantasies they became through Tom’s drawings. By posing for Tom’s camera\, they offered themselves up to his erotic imagination where everyone is youthful\, impossibly fit\, well endowed\, masculine\, virile and versatile. The homogeneity of his figures creates a kind of egalitarianism where violent societal power structures collapse into a carnivalesque orgy. \nIt’s easy to see the appeal of this fantasy world\, when in reality we must navigate the collective erotic imagination informed by class\, race\, age\, body type and gender presentation. Whether the scripts associated with the roles we inhabit align with or are antagonistic to our desires\, we all contend with how our bodies are perceived. These paintings are an exploration of how we as Queer men grapple with the archetypes available to us in order to make ourselves legible to the desires of other men. \n\n–Éamon McGivern \nAVAILABLE WORKS \n \nOPENING RECEPTION: Thursday 31st July from 6-9p\nJoin us on this special evening celebrating his accomplishments. \nThe program will include an artists talk with McGivern and former Artist-in-Residence Carta Monir as well as performances by Peter Kalisch\, Emily Lucid and Cade Moga.  \n\n\n\nMeet Éamon McGivern\, Artist-in-Residence\nWelcome Éamon! Éamon McGivern is a painter from San Francisco who over the last seven years has painted portraits of Bay Area Queers\, punks and poets. More recently\, he has been delving into the archives of twentieth century LGBTQ+ history\, picking up strands from holes in the historical narratives in an attempt to darn the tears between the past and present wrought by political oppression\, transphobia and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. McGivern’s work feeds into the sorrow borne from the absence…

These artists’ use of fluorescent pigments and neon colors are a phenomenon perhaps inspired by our globalized and hyper connected world. \n\nIs the act of painting with these hyper saturated colors an attempt to raise our voices? To be louder / to make ourselves be heard in a society in which we have been so used to being silent? \nIs it a symptom of our velvet rage? \nIs it euphoria? So high on something that we see colors typically unseen? \nAre they celebratory or in contrast\, is it hysteric turmoil? \nHysteria sets out to investigate this impulse in Queer contemporary art. \nFar from trying to provide a straight answer to all these questions\, Hysteria invites the viewer into this universe to experience it for themselves. \n  \n\nView Hysteria at Off Sunset on Sunday 27th April from 12-7p. The exhibition will continue at TOM House through 5th May. \nArtists include Pol Anglada\, Joseph André Michel François Beausoleil\, Tristor Blue\, Paul Booth\, John Brooks\, Carlos Enfedaque\, William E. Jones\, Matt Lifson\, Oat Montien\, Christian Rogers\, and Natalie Strait. \n

SUMMARY:RACHEL BRITTON and ORPHEUS "Underworld"

Britton’s photographs are meticulously handcrafted\, countering the increasing ubiquity of A.I. imagery. She begins by photographing the human body for texture then stitches the images together layer by layer in Adobe Photoshop to create grotesque yet compelling visions that blur the boundary between fantasy and reality. \nOrpheus’ oil paintings capture flashbulb moments of intense sexual desire evoking anonymous encounters in sex clubs\, faceless apartments and hotel rooms familiar to many Gay men. However\, his techniques\, materials\, compositions and moods draw from art history\, recalling baroque painters such as Caravaggio and Rembrandt in a bold celebration of raw\, Gay sexuality. \nThe evening will also see Orpheus launch his new book Underworlds\, while attendees enjoy music by Mellow Code.

SUMMARY:SUNG HWAN BOBBY PARK "BTM 아 Ahhh"
DESCRIPTION:VIEWING HOURS: Tuesday-Sunday from 11a-5p\nA billboard-scale portrait fills the gallery’s front window space: the work depicts artist Sung Hwan Bobby Park\, wearing a 방탄모 bangtanmo\, a ceramic military helmet secured with a satin ribbon. Bathed in hot golden projected light\, the artist is both subject and agent of this photographic image\, claiming the space in front of the camera\, and in front of passersby\, as a site of self-sovereignty and intention. In the work’s installation at Te Pātaka Toi Adam Art Gallery\, the background colour exceeds the edges of the photographic image to include the adjacent wall and gallery’s main entranceway in its entirety. The viewer is first visually met with the resonant colour surrounding the image\, and then immersed in it on entering the space. \nSung Hwan works primarily in ceramics\, and with reference to his experiences as a Queer person undergoing military service as a marine in South Korea between 2012-2014\, and subsequent research related to the military. The BTM series\, within which the ceramic helmet is centred\, exists as an explicit assertion of Queer subjectivity. In the artist’s words\, this is a statement of Queer magnificence\, standing in direct response to the harm caused to Park and his peers forced to hide their identities by the armed forces. Specifically\, in 2017\, Sung Hwan learned that the Korean military had for a period created fake dating profiles as means to entrap soldiers who were Queer\, with those caught being investigated and outed to their units. \nBTM 아 Ahhh\, 2023\, which sits within an ongoing series of stills of the helmets as worn by the artist\, features a helmet with a gaping mouth and teeth adorned with pearls suspended on silver chains. The protruding tongue is pierced with a silver rod; green hair-extensions tassel or fall as braids from the crown of the gloss-glazed helmet with BTM insignia\, and a useable candle holder. The artist wears a necklace of PrEP pills\, HIV prevention medication\, and a side-eyed look that is shaded by the helmet’s low brim. The figure is counterturned\, subtly echoing homoerotic masculine representations within western classical history. \nSince 2018 the helmet has had a presence in Sung Hwan’s practice\, with individual works accumulating to become a formal language in which the body – the body of clay\, the human body – is foregrounded as protagonist. In this sense the work might be considered as form of Queer self-portrait\, commissioned by the ceramicist-artist Sung Hwan\, who works in collaboration with professional photographer Josh Harvey to achieve the image. Another work made in collaboration\, BTM 조상초상화 Ancestor Portrait\, 2023\, alludes to Bunmu\, official portraits of loyal military men in the Joseon era (late fourteenth to early twentieth century). In this work Sung Hwan wears a custom 단령 danryung jacket\, made by collaborator Steven Junil Park\, with 흉배 hyungbae or embroidered square depicting a flying unicorn distributing PrEP pills. Both BTM 조상초상화 Ancestor Portrait and BTM 아 Ahhh synthesise recognisable art-historical tropes with styling choices and narratives specific to this artist and his contemporary context. \nWe might read these portraits as an implicit queering of the dynamic art critic John Berger suggests is definitive of historical portraiture in the Western tradition: “On the one hand there is the individualism of the artist the thinker\, the patron\, the owner: on the other hand\, the person who is the object of their activities – the woman – treated as a thing or an abstraction” (Ways of Seeing\, 1972) Sung Hwan’s ‘self-portrait’ might in fact be read is a hybrid form within which subject-object relations are fluid\, and self-perception is validated. The viewer is not assumed to be a heterosexual male; the viewed is not assumed to be in state of submission to the vison of the photographer. New formal and political relationships become apparent: between forms of bodily adornment and self-protection\, between same-sex desire and its multiple art historical lineages\, between representations of queer joy and other modes of insubordination. \n— \n박성환 Sung Hwan Bobby Park was born in 청주시 Cheongju\, South Korea\, and moved to Aotearoa in 2000. He is based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Since completing study in product design at Auckland University of Technology in 2016\, Sung Hwan’s practice has expanded to include ceramic sculpture\, installation\, performance\, drawing\, and photography. In 2023 he was a recipient of a Springboard award from the Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi. Recent exhibitions include BTM: Assembly at Objectspace\, BTM: Season at Season\, and Aotearoa Contemporary at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki (all Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland\, 2024). Sung Hwan was recently Artist-in-Residence at Tom of Finland Foundation in Los Angeles.
