SUMMARY:Gay Greatness
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nA Lecture by Gregorio Luke\nGAY GREATNESS celebrates the accomplishments of Gay\, Lesbian and Transgender individuals in art\, history and culture\, from Socrates and Sappho\, to Oscar Wilde and Elton John. It is also about an unbelievable level of persecution and hatred. Gays have been burned at the stake\, tortured\, imprisoned\, marginalized\, and persecuted.  \nThis is also the story of the struggle of the Gay community to overcome oppression and prejudice\, through talent and individual genius and in recent decades a powerful Civil Rights movement. Tom of Finland is is referenced in regards to the US government reclassifying Homosexuality as no longer a disease. \n \n\n\nMy mother is the famous choreographer Gloria Contreras\, director of the Taller Coreográfico de la UNAM\, I grew up surrounded by designers and dancers\, many of them Gay\, they were surrogate father figures for me. Particularly painful was the devastating loss of life during the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and ’90s. I saw people l loved\, in the flower of their youth\, age prematurely and die. This presentation is a tribute to those who did not make it and an inspiration for the Gay youth of the future.  \n\nGregorio Luke is an expert on Mexican and Latin American art and culture. He is the former Director of the Museum of Latin American Art\, Consul of Cultural Affairs of Mexico in Los Angeles and the First Secretary of the Embassy of Mexico in Washington\, D.C. Mr. Luke has given over 1\,000 lectures in museums and universities in Mexico\, Europe and the United States. \nLIMITED SEATING \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDuring Long Beach Gay Pride Weekend

SUMMARY:When Someone Sees Us: Expanding Ideas About Queer Erotic Art
DESCRIPTION:Join moderator Jerri Allyn and panelists Amina Cruz\, Cade Moga\, Jamison Edgar in a lively discussion about the line between eroticizing and exoticizing Femme\, Trans\, and BIPOC bodies.\nErotic? Exotic? Sexualities? How does one present sensual women\, Trans figures\, and Bodies of Color in the arts without exoticizing them? \nPhotographer Amina Cruz\, will present work exploring outsider cultures’ Queerness as well as pornography experiments\, investigating the space between transformation and identity. \nMultidisciplinary Artist Cade Moga will reflect on their practice of auto-erotic self-documentation and self-exploitation from Cis pin-up model through Trans-masc porn performer\, and beyond. \nJamison Edgar\, Co-curator of the following exhibits\, will share the artwork of some artists from: Erotic Codex; You Make Me Feel Mighty Real: Drag/Tech and the Queer Avatar; and Queering Digital-Artists: In Response to Anti Trans Legislation. \nAs we bring diverse artists into established organizations and dominant cultural institutions\, how might we ensure their work will be respected and appropriately contextualized? \n  \nA native Angeleno\, Amina Cruz hitchhiked around the country before earning her BFA in Photography from Parsons NY\, and an MFA from UCLA. Her interests are in Queer culture\, film/analog photography\, and exploring the space between transformation and identity\, currently exploring outsider cultures of Brown Queer punks.\n \n \n \n  \n \n \nCade Moga (they/them)\, a gender-non-conforming artist from Brazil\, works across film\, installation\, and performance. After immigrating to Los Angeles and studying at Otis College\, Cade moved from femme pin-up modeling toward exploring Trans-masculinity. Their work merges body-horror Queerness and South American magical realism to redefine erotic\, feminist\, and Brazilian narratives.\n \n \n \n \nJamison Edgar (they/them) is a Queer curator shaping exhibitions of radical exuberance that foreground Queer\, Trans\, Black\, and Brown artists. Based in Los Angeles\, they co-founded Departure Lounge\, directed Honor Fraser Gallery\, and collaborate widely. Their projects and writing appear internationally\, alongside leadership roles with SUPERCOLLIDER and the New Media Caucus.\n \n \n \n \nJerri Allyn’s (s/he\, shimm/her) diverse artistic practice encompasses a range of media. Their art explores complex themes: power dynamics\, identity formation\, and the intersections of bodily autonomy\, race\, and social class. Allyn has exhibited internationally and received major grants and residencies\, including a Rockefeller\, Lila Wallace\, Joan Mitchell\, and NEA.\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nThis talk is part of FXLK PLAY: Artists-in-Mischief\, Devotion\, and Mythmaking on view in West Hollywood’s Plummer Park\, 19th February–19th March 2026\, Thursdays through Sundays Noon-5p \n

SUMMARY:The Art of Arousal
DESCRIPTION:Join moderator Richard Meyer and panelists\, Dian Hanson\, John Morace\, and Artist-in-Resident alumnus Fausto as they discuss the many ways art can pique our interest. \nThis panel addresses the role of arousal in the making and viewing of art. What turns us on in the museum\, gallery\, or the art section of a bookstore that we don’t admit to others? How can we acknowledge sexual pleasure in the presence of art without shame or defensiveness? How does art arouse us in ways that go beyond the strictly sexual? \nThis talk is part of FXLK PLAY: Artists-in-Mischief\, Devotion\, and Mythmaking on view in West Hollywood’s Plumer Park\, 19th February–19th March 2026\, Thursday through Sunday Noon-5p \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n© 2025 THE JOHN BURTON HARTER FOUNDATION\n\nRichard Meyer is Robert and Ruth Halperin Professor in Art History and Director of American Studies at Stanford University\, where he teaches courses in modern and contemporary art\, censorship\, and gender and sexuality studies. He is the author of Outlaw Representation: Censorship and Homosexuality in Twentieth-Century American Art and co-author\, with Catherine Lord\, of Art and Queer Culture. His most recent book\, Master of the Two Left Feet: Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered is a study of a Brooklyn tailor and slipper-maker who\, against all odds\, achieved international recognition as a self-taught painter in the 1940s. \nDian Hanson has been TASCHEN Publishing’s “sexy book” editor and writer since 2001. While with TASCHEN\, she’s produced Tom of Finland: The Comic Collection\, The Complete Kake Comics\, and Tom of Finland XXL; Quaintance; Bob’s World and AMG 1000 Model Directory on the work of Physique Pictorial’s Bob Mizer; My Buddy\, amateur nudes by and of WWII military men; the ever popular Big Penis Book; and the only book on Ren Hang\, before his death at age 29. Pre-TASCHEN\, Dian produced sex magazines for Mavety Media for 15 years\, working on JUGGS and Leg Show. Her experience at Mavety taught her that arousal is unique to each individual\, often unpredictable\, and that more JUGGS subscribers than one would ever imagine were also reading Inches. \nJohn Morace is an art collector with over 40 years of experience. During that time\, he advised collectors on building collections and helped revive interest in several important artists’ estates\, including Tom of Finland\, John Boscovich and Nam June Paik. Currently\, John is assisting ZIAN Gallery\, in Hangzhou\, China to develop their strategy and plan. He’s enjoyed every day he has spent collecting\, speaking\, and advising about art collection. There is always something interesting to see\, and even if there isn’t\, there is plenty to think about\, and too many ways to spend money. \nFausto was born in 1972 in East Germany\, Berlin. He studied medicine\, specializing in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He has worked and trained in Berlin\, Zurich\, Vogtareuth (Bavaria) and Tuebingen. In 2009 he changed from hospital work to administration of German national health care. At the same time\, he started an artistic career as a painter and has participated in several group shows in Germany. He was an artist–in-residence at Tom of Finland Foundation September–December 2024. \n\nNote: TOM House is located on a residential street in Echo Park—we strongly encourage ride-share or public transit.

SUMMARY:World AIDS Day at The Broad
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nArtists and Activism\nCommemorate World AIDS Day with a panel discussion featuring multidisciplinary artists Rubén Esparza\, Ken Gonzales-Day\, and Joey Terrill\, and photographer/documentarian Judy Ornelas Sisneros\, moderated by art journalist Carolina A. Miranda.\nArtists have long raised their voices against injustice\, channeled their unique talents to bring awareness to important topics\, picked up cameras to document the world as it needs to be seen\, and rallied movements around shared ideals. The Broad collection includes many artists whose artwork addresses cultural crises and current social and political topics. \nThroughout their careers\, the speakers featured in this conversation have defiantly and proudly shaped how we see the AIDS crisis along with other pertinent issues. This conversation traces a timeline from the US government mishandling the onset of HIV/AIDS in the 1980s\, to Proposition 8 for same-sex marriage\, the Covid-19 crisis\, and repeated attempts to silence and strip rights from LGBTQIA+ individuals\, immigrants\, and other marginalized people. \nRubén Esparza (b. 1962 in El Paso\, TX\, lives and works in Los Angeles\, CA) is an interdisciplinary artist whose works span the media of painting\, sculpture\, photography\, drawing\, and collage. As an independent curator\, his artistic practice includes an extensive curatorial project record.\nKen Gonzales-Day arrived in New York in 1983 where he would come to know a community of artists whose lives and work were deeply impacted by HIV/AIDS including Keith Haring\, Félix González-Torres\, and David Wojnarowicz. He is now a Los Angeles-based artist.\nCarolina A. Miranda is an independent culture writer and critic based in Los Angeles\, covering visual culture\, design\, performance\, books\, and digital life. Until early 2024\, she was a columnist at the Los Angeles Times.\nJudy Ornelas Sisneros was a member of ACT UP Los Angeles from mid-May 1990 to January 1995. She was a member of the Women’s Caucus and in spring of 1991 she co-facilitated the Agitating & Legal Committee whose major action was the AIDSphobia in Hollywood campaign.\nJoey Terrill (b. 1955\, Los Angeles\, California) joins diverse mediums of zine-making\, performance\, printmaking\, collage\, and painting in a body of work that tenderly encompasses his intimate experiences of intersecting queer\, Chicano and artistic communities.\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”66060″ onclick=”custom_link” img_link_target=”_blank” css=”” link=”https://ticketing.thebroad.org/events/01cb5a3c-7e29-6136-1226-ff5dde271b2f” title=”FREE”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nOculus Hall \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
