Former Tom of Finland Foundation Artist-in-Residence Carlos Enfedaque will participate in this year’s Off Sunset Festival with an exhibition of artwork he has curated titled Hysteria.
Hysteria is a group show exploring myriad of ways Queer artists use vivid color in painting. These artists’ use of fluorescent pigments and neon colors are a phenomenon perhaps inspired by our globalized and hyper connected world.
Is the act of painting with these hyper saturated colors an attempt to raise our voices? To be louder / to make ourselves be heard in a society in which we have been so used to being silent?
Is it a symptom of our velvet rage?
Is it euphoria? So high on something that we see colors typically unseen?
Are they celebratory or in contrast, is it hysteric turmoil?
Hysteria sets out to investigate this impulse in Queer contemporary art.
Far from trying to provide a straight answer to all these questions, Hysteria invites the viewer into this universe to experience it for themselves.
View Hysteria at Off Sunset on Sunday 27th April from 12-7p. The exhibition will continue at TOM House through 5th May.
Artists include Pol Anglada, Joseph André Michel François Beausoleil, Tristor Blue, Paul Booth, John Brooks, Carlos Enfedaque, William E. Jones, Matt Lifson, Oat Montien, Christian Rogers, and Natalie Strait.
