SUMMARY:"Sex Now"
DESCRIPTION:With works by Paul McCarthy\, Peaches\, Zheng Bo\, Tom of Finland\, Joëlle Dubois\, Poulomi Basu\, Miyo van Stenis\, Antigoni Tsagkaropoulou\, Martin de Crignis\, Melody Melamed\, Fausto Berlin and many more.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n PLEUN VAN DIJK\n \n \n \n \n \n TOM OF FINLAND\n \n \n\nSex can connect\, liberate\, hurt and control people. With the exhibition Sex Now\, you are invited to discover lust\, bodies and desire in all their complexity. From latex fashion\, furniture design\, photography and media art to dolls and toys: in ten themed rooms with around 400 objects\, are staged to create an intimate dialogue about sexuality and society. The exhibition tells of erotic fantasies\, Queer perspectives and new realities—free of taboos and stigma. \nA historical introduction shows how sexual morality has changed: from traditional gender roles to the sexual revolution of 1968 to today’s #sexpositivity. A 1969 sex education atlas and purple dungarees as a symbol of political emancipation meet works such as Fleshie Fountain by artist Peaches—an installation of sex toys originally intended for male masturbation that now subvert patriarchal power relations. \nFAUSTO BERLIN \nInteractive stations invite visitors to playfully question their own experiences\, ideas and myths. The Sexoscope takes a humorous look into the future\, a body knowledge collective displays genital models that can be taken apart\, and in the Queer #Fluffy Library\, a plush creature devours feminist stories—and turns them into new knowledge. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nSex Now presents female artists\, designers and activists whose work contributes to sexual emancipation. They help minorities gain greater visibility and act as educators in an area that\, despite the sexual revolution and commercialization\, is still characterized by inequality and shame. To accompany the exhibition\, NRW-Forum Düsseldorf is launching thier own OnlyFans account\, which will show uncensored behind-the-scenes insights and selected works. \n The exhibition was curated by Alain Bieber (Artistic Director of NRW-Forum Düsseldorf) and Judith Winterhager (Curatorial Assistant). \nTuesday–Sunday: 11a–6p\nThursday: 11a–9p\nMonday: Closed\n€9.50  regular \n€6.50  reduced\nINFO

SUMMARY:"Miettinen Collection: Body Politics"
DESCRIPTION:Opening ceremony: Friday 23rd January from 6 to 8p \n\nThe exhibition presents a wide selection of works by Finnish and internationally renowned artists and provides an overview of the art collection\, where the human body plays a central role. The exhibition features approximately 130 works that invite us to deepen our understanding of humanity. \nThe name Body Politics refers to the social norms and politics that regulate the human body\, as well as the struggle between the individual and society for control over it. The exhibition is named after the Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo’s (b. 1984) work Body Politics 3 (2016). Boafo\, a leading contemporary artist\, addresses the role of ethnicity\, identity and masculinity in his powerful paintings – themes which are central to the exhibition. \nOn view in the exhibition are also works by Finnish and international artists such as Alexander Basil\, Karim Boumjimar\, Louise Bourgeois\, Elina Brotherus\, Zohar Fraiman\, Leiko Ikemura\, Janne Räisänen\, Julian Röder\, Emma Sarpaniemi\, Tom of Finland and Grace Weaver. \nThe exhibition concludes an international tour of museum exhibitions that has presented the collection in both Germany and Finland. \nCurated by Noora Lehtovuori\, Maaria Salo and Janna Sirén. \n\nTimo Miettinen has made his career within the family business. Today\, he is more dedicated to the art collection and is the family’s second-generation art collector\, who was exposed to art from an early age. He lives in Berlin\, where Miettinen Collection is also located–a meeting place that focuses on the internationalization of Finnish art. The Miettinen Collection contains approximately 1\,500 works and since 2004 the collection has been expanded with contemporary art. \nPhoto Noora Lehtovuori courtesy Galerie Judin \nThe human figure and the nude body are among the oldest and most classical subjects in art\, and the exhibition at presents them in all their complexity. The show explores the body as both an individual\, emotional experience and as part of broader social and political structures. Body Politics challenges norms\, celebrates desire and sensuality\, and reflects on identity\, freedom and the rules society places on the human body. \n  \nOpen Wednesday–Saturday 10a–5p. Closed Sunday till Tuesday.

SUMMARY:CARLOS ENFEDAQUE “It was happiness\, the moment right then.”
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by Carlos Enfedaque at Tom of Finland Foundation exploring happiness as a fleeting experience shaped by memory\, place\, and perception across Berlin\, Mexico City\, and Los Angeles. \nThe work reflects on presence and impermanence\, using Los Angeles hummingbirds as a metaphor for moments of joy that vanish when observed or held onto. \nFollowing a Mexico City residency engaging Queer Mexican poetry\, Enfedaque expands his practice from painting into photography\, installation\, and Super 8 film\, returning to the human figure through poetic imagery. \nThe exhibition is grounded in “possibility” and shaped by influences including Steven Arnold\, Paul Cadmus\, Jean Cocteau\, Tom of Finland\, Tacita Dean\, and Rafa Esparza. \n  \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nCHECKLIST \n  \n \n \n  \n \nOpening Reception | 23rd April \n\nON VIEW BY APPOINTMENT +1 213 250 1685\n \n\nMeet Artist-in-Residence Carlos Enfedaque\n						  Carlos Enfedaque is a Berlin-based painter from Zaragoza\, Spain. SUMMARY:"Photography in Power: Making Worlds Visible"
DESCRIPTION:  \nTOM OF FINLAND Tom & Tom Katt\, 1984 © Tom of Finland Foundation \nThe exhibition celebrates the force and impact of the photographers whose stories have been shared at Fotografiska. It is a tribute to their lifelong commitment to photography that has profoundly shaped how we see the world\, look at it\, and perceive it today. \nThe exhibition brings together 127 artists\, including iconic figures of fine art photography. It also brings together a diverse range of contemporary photographic voices\, including both international names and Estonian artists. Many of them engage with the defining tensions of our time–exploring conflict\, power relations\, and social pressures\, while weaving together documentary  and staged approaches. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Amanda as Andy Warhol’s Liz in Purple\, 2007 © David LaChapelle\n \n \n \n \n \n Frederick Douglass 1818-1895\, 2014\, © Omar Victor Diop. Exhibited in 2022.\n \n \n\nMaking worlds visible\nThe exhibition moves through the landscapes of inner worlds\, the visible and hidden societal tensions\, and the fragile balance between humanity and nature. It also brings forward the paradoxes of beauty and representation – we look at beauty\, glamour\, and fashion culture as a mirror\, at times clear\, at times distorted. Here\, vulnerability and resistance\, intimacy and distance\, identity and belonging intertwine. \nAcross this spectrum\, photography reveals its depth\, diversity\, and force – it is not merely a technique\, but a way of seeing and understanding the world. Different modes of photographic expression emerge through the exhibition’s themes\, each carrying its own character and energy. \nIt brings together international stars Helmut Newton\, Robert Mapplethorpe\, Richard Avedon\, Refik Anadol\, Ellen von Unwerth\, Paolo Roversi\, Martin Schoeller\, Lars Tunbjörk\, Sarah Moon\, Peter Lindbergh\, David LaChapelle\, Jimmy Nelson\, and Tom of Finland. \nUntitled\, 2014 © Ren Hang\, exhibited in 2017. \n\nMonday–Thursday 9a–8p\nFriday 9a–midnight\nSaturday 10a–8p\nSunday 1a–9p

SUMMARY:Gay Greatness
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nA Lecture by Gregorio Luke\nGAY GREATNESS celebrates the accomplishments of Gay\, Lesbian and Transgender individuals in art\, history and culture\, from Socrates and Sappho\, to Oscar Wilde and Elton John. It is also about an unbelievable level of persecution and hatred. Gays have been burned at the stake\, tortured\, imprisoned\, marginalized\, and persecuted.  \nThis is also the story of the struggle of the Gay community to overcome oppression and prejudice\, through talent and individual genius and in recent decades a powerful Civil Rights movement. Tom of Finland is is referenced in regards to the US government reclassifying Homosexuality as no longer a disease. \n \n\n\nMy mother is the famous choreographer Gloria Contreras\, director of the Taller Coreográfico de la UNAM\, I grew up surrounded by designers and dancers\, many of them Gay\, they were surrogate father figures for me. Particularly painful was the devastating loss of life during the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and ’90s. I saw people l loved\, in the flower of their youth\, age prematurely and die. This presentation is a tribute to those who did not make it and an inspiration for the Gay youth of the future.  \n\nGregorio Luke is an expert on Mexican and Latin American art and culture. He is the former Director of the Museum of Latin American Art\, Consul of Cultural Affairs of Mexico in Los Angeles and the First Secretary of the Embassy of Mexico in Washington\, D.C. Mr. Luke has given over 1\,000 lectures in museums and universities in Mexico\, Europe and the United States. \nLIMITED SEATING \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDuring Long Beach Gay Pride Weekend

SUMMARY:"Queer as Comics"
DESCRIPTION:  \nBOB ROSS Satyr (From Gay Comix #10)\, 1986. San Francisco © Burton Clarke \n  \n“Comics have a long tradition of being subversive: not solely art or literature but a combination of both to make their messages captivate readers. They lend themselves perfectly to Queer themes as brilliantly showcased in the exhibition.” \n–Paul Gravett\, Curator \n  \n For the first time in the UK\, Queer as Comics will celebrate 80 years of LGBTQ IA+ comics\, including previously unseen original works by more than 60 artists from around the world ranging from underground creators to influential icons\, including Tove Jansson\, David Shenton\, Rupert Kinnard\, Alison Bechdel and Tom of Finland.  \nThe Centre will open with a landmark exhibition depicting stories of fantasy\, identity and resistance told across time by Queer comic-makers. Spanning the 1940s to present day\, this major exhibition of LGBTQIA+ comic-making and will feature rarely displayed original artwork from comics\, strip cartoons\, graphic novels and zines chronicling the significance of comics for Queer art and literature. \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bob was sitting at his place flicking magazines\, when the doorbell rang. What kind of peddler could it be this time?\n \n \n \n \n \n Two sturdy guys were standing at the door. “We have a little errand.”\n \n \n \n \n \n Before Bob even knew what was going on\, the guys were already inside and shut the door. “Now you obey us nicely and undress.”\n \n \n\n \nTOM OF FINLAND (Finnish\, 1920–1991) Initiation Into the Brotherhood\, 1946\nPen & ink and gouache on paper\, 5.75” x 4.25”\nTom of Finland Foundation Permanent Collection\, \nCourtesy David Kordansky Gallery\n© Tom of Finland Foundation\nWhile Tom’s bold\, hypermasculine style is iconic today\, in 1940s Finland his homoerotic comics remained unpublished for years\, shared only in secret among friends. These panels come from one of those clandestine works.
