SUMMARY:"Photography in Power: Making Worlds Visible"
DESCRIPTION:  \nTOM OF FINLAND Tom & Tom Katt\, 1984 © Tom of Finland Foundation \nThe exhibition celebrates the force and impact of the photographers whose stories have been shared at Fotografiska. It is a tribute to their lifelong commitment to photography that has profoundly shaped how we see the world\, look at it\, and perceive it today. \nThe exhibition brings together 127 artists\, including iconic figures of fine art photography. It also brings together a diverse range of contemporary photographic voices\, including both international names and Estonian artists. Many of them engage with the defining tensions of our time–exploring conflict\, power relations\, and social pressures\, while weaving together documentary  and staged approaches. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Amanda as Andy Warhol’s Liz in Purple\, 2007 © David LaChapelle\n \n \n \n \n \n Frederick Douglass 1818-1895\, 2014\, © Omar Victor Diop. Exhibited in 2022.\n \n \n\nMaking worlds visible\nThe exhibition moves through the landscapes of inner worlds\, the visible and hidden societal tensions\, and the fragile balance between humanity and nature. It also brings forward the paradoxes of beauty and representation – we look at beauty\, glamour\, and fashion culture as a mirror\, at times clear\, at times distorted. Here\, vulnerability and resistance\, intimacy and distance\, identity and belonging intertwine. \nAcross this spectrum\, photography reveals its depth\, diversity\, and force – it is not merely a technique\, but a way of seeing and understanding the world. Different modes of photographic expression emerge through the exhibition’s themes\, each carrying its own character and energy. \nIt brings together international stars Helmut Newton\, Robert Mapplethorpe\, Richard Avedon\, Refik Anadol\, Ellen von Unwerth\, Paolo Roversi\, Martin Schoeller\, Lars Tunbjörk\, Sarah Moon\, Peter Lindbergh\, David LaChapelle\, Jimmy Nelson\, and Tom of Finland. \nUntitled\, 2014 © Ren Hang\, exhibited in 2017. \n\nMonday–Thursday 9a–8p\nFriday 9a–midnight\nSaturday 10a–8p\nSunday 1a–9p

SUMMARY:"Queer as Comics"
DESCRIPTION:  \nBOB ROSS Satyr (From Gay Comix #10)\, 1986. San Francisco © Burton Clarke \n  \n“Comics have a long tradition of being subversive: not solely art or literature but a combination of both to make their messages captivate readers. They lend themselves perfectly to Queer themes as brilliantly showcased in the exhibition.” \n–Paul Gravett\, Curator \n  \n For the first time in the UK\, Queer as Comics will celebrate 80 years of LGBTQ IA+ comics\, including previously unseen original works by more than 60 artists from around the world ranging from underground creators to influential icons\, including Tove Jansson\, David Shenton\, Rupert Kinnard\, Alison Bechdel and Tom of Finland.  \nThe Centre will open with a landmark exhibition depicting stories of fantasy\, identity and resistance told across time by Queer comic-makers. Spanning the 1940s to present day\, this major exhibition of LGBTQIA+ comic-making and will feature rarely displayed original artwork from comics\, strip cartoons\, graphic novels and zines chronicling the significance of comics for Queer art and literature. \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bob was sitting at his place flicking magazines\, when the doorbell rang. What kind of peddler could it be this time?\n \n \n \n \n \n Two sturdy guys were standing at the door. “We have a little errand.”\n \n \n \n \n \n Before Bob even knew what was going on\, the guys were already inside and shut the door. “Now you obey us nicely and undress.”\n \n \n\n \nTOM OF FINLAND (Finnish\, 1920–1991) Initiation Into the Brotherhood\, 1946\nPen & ink and gouache on paper\, 5.75” x 4.25”\nTom of Finland Foundation Permanent Collection\, \nCourtesy David Kordansky Gallery\n© Tom of Finland Foundation\nWhile Tom’s bold\, hypermasculine style is iconic today\, in 1940s Finland his homoerotic comics remained unpublished for years\, shared only in secret among friends. These panels come from one of those clandestine works. Enjoy Tom’s place in Queer comic history. \nhttps://www.tomoffinland.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Curator-talks-Tom-Tove.mp4\nDiscover stories of fantasy\, identity and resistance\, as told by Queer comic-makers.\n \nRUPERT KINNARD Betterment of Parental Guilt\, 1988. Cathartic Comics. © 2025 Rupert Kinnard \n\n \nFor decades\, Queer artists have used comics to share impactful stories\, often in defiance of censorship. The exhibition reveals how comics have provided a voice for Queer communities. Artwork on view addresses state power\, discrimination and bold visions. Today\, Queer creators continue to expand the medium through ambitious graphic novels\, self-publishing and more. \n  \nWednesday to Sunday: 10a–5p
