“Wish You Were Queer”

Invisibility of LGBTI* In Art and History
The exhibition examines the self-image and perception of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex people throughout the centuries. It particularly highlights the extent to which the 1969 Christopher Street uprisings in New York represented a turning point in their visibility. These uprisings marked the beginning of a comprehensive struggle for emancipation and led to increasing self-confidence worldwide.
The exhibition presents works of art from the Middle Ages to the present day and demonstrates the highly fluctuating degree of visibility in images. In the works of over thirty artists, including Kerstin Drechsel, Rainer Fetting, Rinaldo Hopf, Emanuel Leutze, Marga van den Meydenberg, Christian Schad, Tom of Finland, and Jürgen Wittdorf, it uncovers the codes of same-sex desire and searches for sexual, romantic, and gender diversity in the images.
