“Louie” was the owner of Stompers. He was an accomplished pianist and award-winning composer who organized SMASH (Society to Make America Safe for Homosexuals). Weingarden died of AIDS in Manhattan in 1989.
In the front, Stompers was a boot store, and in the back, an art gallery. Owned by Louis Weingarden in Greenwich Village, it was a key player in legitimizing gay male art and promoting images of the Leather community. It was frequented by talented Manhattan personalities.
Durk Dehner arranged this show, a joint exhibit for Tom in conjunction with Etienne at Stompers. The two artists were delighted to finally meet after admiring each other’s work for a long time. The exhibition’s visitors’ list was studded with the names of such celebrities as Gore Vidal, Halston, and Andy Warhol (who owned several Tom of Finland originals).
