Traveling the World of TOM: A Talk with Rachel Mason and Durk Dehner at Circus of Books

What are the spaces, both online and off, where our histories reside? Where did we get to see lives that look like ours, art that captures who we are? How do we document who we are?

In 1988, Tom of Finland had the signing for his first fine art book at Circus of Books, a bookstore that had one of the largest distributions of adult content at the time. Circus of Books, which had stores in both the West Hollywood and Silver Lake areas of Los Angeles, was a family-owned piece of LGBTQ history. Recently, Durk got together with Rachel Mason, the daughter of the Circus of Books owners, to discuss the importance of documenting our histories, as well as the recent release of Tom’s biography, The Official Life and Work of a Gay Hero. Rachel’s documentary Circus of Books was executive produced by Ryan Murphy and is currently streaming on Netflix

Many thanks to Chi Chi LaRue and Rob Novinger at Circus of Books for making this shoot possible.
