Tom of Finland Art and Culture Festival 2019: OUR Community Standards
5th-6th October

Recon visits TOM House for last year’s Art Fair and presents a genuine reflection of our vibrant and relevant community.

We are experiencing unprecedented challenges to our freedoms – especially when it comes to expression, as has been experienced by a number of LGBT artists who have been deleted, removed, banned or otherwise barred from full representation on social media.

For nearly a quarter century Tom of Finland Foundation has hosted an annual Art and Culture Festival celebrating all things LGBT, erotic, beautiful, taboo and fringe.

OUR Community Standards will look at censorship in art, and provide a safe, positive and inclusive environment for both artists and the general public to see, feel and engage with art of all types, in a historic location that has played host to many luminaries throughput the years.

The Festival will showcase nearly 50 artists, the opportunity for visitors to make art themselves during the life drawing sessions with live models, film screenings, a live auction and the annual presentation of Tom of Finland Foundation Awards – to artists, supporters, and those who make a difference.

OUR Community Standards

We want our community to continue to be an authentic and safe place for inspiration and expression. Help us foster this positive, diverse, global community whose mission is dedicated to protect, preserve, document and educate the public about erotic art and erotic artists.

We are a reflection of our diversity of culture and shall continue to encourage and empower artists regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, creed, religion, disabilities, diseases, sex, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation. Art is a language of its own, shared without shame.

Artists, by sharing their artistic and creative work, inform society as to the cultural merits of erotic art and its importance in promoting healthier, more tolerant attitudes about sexuality. Artists, and organizations that are experts in their field, should never feel targeted.

Art media are varied and include, but not limited to, drawing, moving pictures and stills, collage, prints, digital/electronic, performance, written word, painting, and sculpture.  Medium of expression shall not be used as censoring criteria. Photographic documentation of artworks presents their significance, and they also may be designed to share.

We understand that for whatever their reason, people may have sensitivities to depictions of sexual encounters between adults. If one finds content they don’t like, they are free to not follow, unfollow or block the entity who posted it from their view.

Artworks are a personal investment of the artist – it is their intellectual property. Creators of art are to be protected and their works are important in promoting expression, creativity, and innovation.

Dialogue is an essential point of engagement in determining all our standards, especially with those who are marginalized and speaking up for their rights. Standards should be not only be inclusive, and based on expert knowledge, but also be transparent.

These are questions our community asks:  How do we communicate on social media platforms? How do we communicate with social media platforms? How do we all come together in trust?
