Honoured to be part of this collaboration with fellow artists Jouni “Psyke” Väänänen and Joonas Koponen (aka Koponee). We got a chance to create a tribute to Tom of Finland (born Touko Laaksonen, 1920-1991) in Hotel Helka as a part of Purkutaide-projekti. Huge respect for this ground breaking Finnish artist in many different ways! We did our best to honor Tom’s artwork and career while bringing our styles along too.
Tom of Finland was a ground breaking Finnish artist in many different ways. I was both excited and terrified at the same time when we started planning the tribute room – excited because this chance might be the only relevant possibility during my artist career to have a crack at Tom’s work and terrified because I knew I couldn’t possibly reach the artistic level of the original artworks in my version of it.
I didn’t want just to replicate the originals with spray paint even if that would’ve been the easiest choice. As an artistic leader I picked another photorealist and a street calligrapher to form a team of three that could create a space in which the classic ToF male characters on black background and multicolored calligraffiti would add value to each other.
The result of the cooperation of quite a lot of parties and authors. Jokka painted the figures and I took care of the frames around them with calligraphy. The text of the Tom of Finland Vodka slogan reads “Make a statement without saying a word”.
