Artists-in-Residence give back to TOM’s Foundation

There are many ways for folks to support Tom of Finland Foundation. Recently, some of our previous Artists-in-Residence have donated works of art that have been accessioned into the Foundation’s permanent collection. Carta Monir

Carta Monir is an artist, porn performer, and micropress publisher living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Carta is now a member of the Tom of Finland Foundation Artist-in-Residence Advisory Committee.

Fausto

With his life-hungry, colorful paintings, Fausto (b. 1972, East Berlin) illustrates personal impressions and experiences. Fausto’s painting is honest and at times ruthless, both in the figurative style and in the choice of his subjects: in addition to landscape paintings, Fausto’s is focused on naked men, sometimes with erections, and on depictions of Gay sex. In his paintings of men, Fausto portrays friends from his environment, such as the gym or parties in Berlin. In elaborately arranged sex scenes (recreated with models in the studio and painted over multiple sessions), Fausto mines his own experiences, which he considers typical representations of Berlin subculture.

Yun-Pei

Born in 1985 and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, Yun-Pei is a creator situated on the blurry border between design and art. A graduate from the Royal College of Art in Product Design and current student at the Taiwan National University Graduate Institute of Building and Planning, social intervention and innovation are at the core of Yun-Pei’s practice. Yun-Pei uses a social sculpture method to trigger social actions, a core tenet in most of his works, which often touch on Queer identity, public space, social housing, neo-capitalism and Taiwanese geopolitics. In 2022, Yun-Pei was granted by the Taiwan Ministry of Culture to be part of the residency program of Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin. His final project “The Missile Factory” invited Berliners to build paper missiles and draw graffiti to disarm the Chinese rockets.

Gray Wielebinski

Gray Wielebinski (b. 1991 Dallas, TX, USA) lives and works in London, UK. In his expansive practice, incorporating installation, video, drawing, performance, collage, sculpture, and more, Wielebinski explores intersecting themes of power, nationhood, desire and memory. The process of collaging runs through his practice in many forms – reconfiguring and transforming iconography and visual codes, his work interrogates dominant frameworks and belief systems and proposes alternatives. Continuously attentive to the fraught status of American mythology and landscape, Wielebinski’s recent work has focused on surveillance, strategy, and secrecy, particularly as these intersect with questions of gender, sexuality, and the social.
