Beyond Tom of Finland: 8 artists redefining Queer erotica

For Queer and Trans people, erotica has always been a potent outlet for navigating desire, exploring identity, and pushing back against censorship.

Close your eyes, think about Queer erotica. You may be inclined to conjure up mental images of the leather daddies, sailors, police, and bulging dick prints Tom of Finland popularized through his homoerotic, hypermasculine art. From the moment his sketch of a laughing lumberjack was featured in the Spring 1957 issue of Physique Pictorial, his drawings cast an outsize, phallic shadow on all other erotica; his influence burst past the Gay community, spilling into the mainstream and culminating in a 2017 biopic. But there’s so much more to the art form than one Finnish legend. For centuries, artists have used erotica to celebrate desire, challenge repression, and (sometimes literally) carve out space for self-expression.

For as long as humans have been horny and had the tools, they’ve made erotica. The 35,000-year-old Venus of Hohle Fels, a small sculpture of a voluptuous woman, could be considered humanity’s first pin-up model. Romans in Pompeii painted explicit frescos of cunnilingus, and Australian Aboriginal rock art depicts men with massive dicks (proving certain artistic urges transcend geography and history).

By the 20th century, a number of artists helped redefine the form. French surrealist Claude Cahun used photography to explore gender norms; American artist Dom Orejudos made groundbreaking Gay male erotica (often under the pen name “Etienne”); British painter Ithell Colquhoun explored Tantric imagery and the magic of sexuality through erotic prints; and Japanese artist Gengoroh Tagame became one of Gay manga’s most acclaimed creators. Even Lucy Liu — yes, of Charlie’s Angels and Kill Bill fame — has explored erotic art, producing a series of sensual paintings from 2006 to 2008 in homage to Shunga, a form of Japanese erotic art practiced from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.

Today, Queer erotica continues to evolve. New digital tools and online communities have modernized the form and proven that eroticism isn’t just about sex. For the LGBTQ+ community specifically, erotica has always been a particularly potent outlet for navigating desire, exploring identity, and pushing back against censorship. As draconian laws in the United States and abroad dismantle so much of the progress we’ve made, erotica is a reminder that we’re here, we’re Queer, and we’re fucking horny. Below, learn about eight artists reimagining the genre, remixing everything from vintage porn to pop culture icons while preserving erotica’s radical edge.

Oat Montien

This Bangkok-born artist isn’t just making erotica — he’s building an entire mythology. As the self-styled “Gay Asian Cowboy,” Oat Montien has given new meaning to the phrase “save a horse, ride a cowboy” through an expansive visual world where Queerness, masculinity, and the Wild West collide. Raised in a Bangkok brothel, the artist was exposed to sexuality and desire from an early age, shaping his unique perspective. His work reimagines classic erotica tropes through an Asian lens, establishing him as one of Thailand’s leading artists while building his reputation as a key figure in modern erotica abroad.
