How can queer be seen in an art museum or cultural organization? In the discussion, perspectives will be heard from professionals and activists in the field of art and culture.

In how many ways can queer manifest itself in an art museum or other cultural organizations? How is it reflected within the organization? Can queer increase inclusivity?

The discussion will be led by long-time rainbow activist and museum professional Antti Kauppinen . Among the speakers are writer, freelance curator Max Hannus , cultural producer, queer activist Wisam Elfadl and art historian, curator and activist Marianne Savallampi.

The discussion (in Finnish) is aimed at professionals in the art and culture field, but it is open to anyone interested.

The event is also part of the TOM OF FINLAND Bold Journey exhibition programme.

Speakers

Antti Kauppinen is a long-time art museum professional and rainbow activist. He has worked e.g. As the coordinator of Amnesty’s rainbow network, in the secretariat of ECMC, the umbrella organization of European Gay fetish clubs, and author of the 40-year history of Finland’s oldest fetish organization MSC Finlandi – Tom’s Club. Kauppinen works as a coordinator at HAM.

Max Hannus is a non-binary, Queer freelance curator and writer from Helsinki who is interested in the touch surfaces of desire, human relationships and art-making. Hannus has curated the Dreamy – Queer Imaginaries exhibition consisting of Kiasma’s collection works, which can be seen on the second floor of the museum.

Marianne Savallampi is an art historian and curator from Helsinki. In her work, she has especially dealt with the themes of feminism, queer theory and activism, and researched queer representation in art. He is one of the founders and former artistic director of the Museum of Impossible Forms cultural center. Currently, Savallampi works as a performing arts producer at Mad House Helsinki performing arts house.

Wisam Elfadl is a cultural producer, queer activist and member of the Wasla collective. The Wasla collective is Finland’s first collective promoting the visibility of LGBTIQ-inclusive interpretations of Islam, whose values ​​and activities are strongly based on the principles of anti-racism, intersectional feminism and a safer space. Curated by Elfadl, the Being Black – Excerpts from Afro-Fomainness exhibition is currently on display at the Helsinki City Museum.
