LUKE ANDAHAZY

Luke Andahazy’s work seeks to capture the mood and memory of specific moments in history. He draws from sources in media and in real life, both historic and current, that have been impactful for gay and queer culture, examining how each snapshot is just part of a larger story playing out in real time. Many of his portraits feature live models from the San Francisco community. He has participated in the San Francisco Superfine Art Fair and has work on display in Philz Coffee in the Castro.

MIKE MARCUS

 

Mike Marcus is a California Bay Area-native who grew up in his mother’s weaving studio and clothing store in the heart of a thriving art community twenty-five miles northeast of San Francisco, CA. He began making and selling jewelry at a very young age. The studio and shop were located above internationally-renowned glass blowers and by the time he was ten years old, he had adopted glass as a primary medium; this continued through his early 30s.

Marcus’ creative practice has always been intertwined with community. However, there was always a disconnect for him between the jewelry that he made and the people who it resonated with. They weren’t his community, per se. As he became more comfortable with his sexuality, he became less comfortable with an art form that didn’t have personal resonance, or resonance with the community that he identified with. As a result, Marcus went on an extended artistic hiatus.

In 2021, Marcus rediscovered his love of printmaking. He has been inspired by various San Francisco Queer artists and has been working to define his creative voice; one that is fully integrated with his personal identity.

Exploring the subject matter of male form, homoeroticism, and Gay male intimacy through a fine art medium is at once an irreverent celebration of who and what Marcus finds beautiful, and simultaneously an indignant political rebuke to the cultural taboos surrounding homosexuality.

Marcus proudly resides in the Castro district of San Francisco, California.

SAMPSON UTLEY

Originally born in the rural hills of Utah, Samspon Utley became fascinated and captivated by the male figure as his sexuality as a Gay man was blossoming. Due to this, and the repressive environment he grew up in, art took on an incredibly special meaning. To Utley, it’s not only a way to bare a bit of one’s soul for anyone to view, but also a way to let something out, that one may be hiding from internally. As he worked, he found myself often times wanting to crank up the contrast, the intensity, the rawness of the image within his mind. It was always more, more, MORE.

Is it really any surprise Utley is a kinkster? This is how he landed on his (often times) black-and-white, high contrast, posterized designs, and also how he fell in love with his favorite medium, wire sculpture, which developed into hand-drawn PLA filament sculpture in recent years for practicality purposes. Utley believes art is just as much why you do it, as what it actually is. For him, the posterization process (a photography term; selectively reducing the number of colors displayed to simplify an image) is incredibly representative of what he wants to provoke for viewers of his work. Reducing something down to its most striking features allows the viewer to “fill in the blanks” a bit. To make something more personal to them. To write a story in their own mind. To become part of the process, and maybe face some of those things inside themselves. Artists can never choose how others view their work, but his hope is that this intention translates through his art to those viewing it.

Since moving to San Francisco in June of 2022, Utley’s life changed in a radical and beautiful way. Being surrounded by other kinky, Queer, artistic people has “opened the floodgates” so to speak, of his own creativity, both in the adult realm, and otherwise. Despite many of his pieces depicting imagery that suggests close intimacy/provocative love, Utley often works and lives best as a loner; though he is extremely grateful for the wonderful men in his life who help foster this side of himself. Branching into the world of graphic design, video editing, and electroluminescent signage has all come from his time in San Francisco, and many of these pieces reflect that extremely uneventful subject of deep happiness; late at night, listening to music, with the sounds of market street whizzing by and whispering more… more… MORE.
