FAKBYFAK is pleased to present a collaboration with Tom of Finland Foundation in the development and design of an exclusive face mask and set of protective gloves inspired by the artist Tom of Finland, the renowned Finnish artist and one of the 20th century’s great visual image-makers. Alex and Roman of FAKBYFAK had long envisioned the concept of a protective accessory line, and with time its realization became extremely relevant in today’s “new reality”.
The release has been timed to coincide with the celebration of Tom of Finland’s Centennial, marked by museum and gallery exhibitions, cultural manifests and partnerships worldwide. In the word of fashion, J.W. Anderson released a capsule collection of fine accessories and leather goods in honour of the artist and Pride celebrations.
Working on the design for the mask and gloves, FAKBYFAK strived to encapsulate the spirit of Tom of Finland’s characters and visual language, delicately and harmoniously combine it with FAKBYFAK’s inherent sense of style.
Just as Tom of Finland elevated the homoerotic to high art, this collaboration changes the perception of a face mask, treating it as an aesthetically considered object that also functions as a protective shield.
Tom of Finland created well-defined images to present-day define and shape popular culture. This collaboration reflects the times in which we live while contributing to Tom of Finland’s memory and legacy. Just like Tom’s art, the mask and gloves convey refinement and a sense of humour — characteristics Tom of Finland is recognized for — while also touching on the human need of connection, engagement and love through safety – traits that contributed to the foundation of Tom’s art.
