At Frieze, Felix, and around town

 

Michael Lucid, Brontez Purnell, and Abel Martinez hit the bar at Tom of Finland Foundation.

 

At Tom of Finland Foundation, National Book Award-winner Justin Torres read with Brontez Purnell outside of the craftsman Echo Park home where Tom of Finland lived and worked, and owned by partner Durk Dehner. Frieze higher-ups showed face inside, posing for photos with Durk, who was clad in head-to-toe leather. Attendant for the reading were Semiotext(e) editor Hedi El Kholti; curator Rubén Esparza; painter Amanda Kirkhuff; Shirley Morales; sometime drag queen and multi-decade viral hitmaker Michael Lucid with boo Abel Martinez; and a gaggle of punky queers, who reeled as Brontez read his memoir-in-verse, Ten Bridges I’ve Burnt. The multihyphenate had to stop reading to shout at guests carrying on in the kitchen above us. “I just wanted to see if they’d listen,” Brontez turned back to us. “What we used to call poor parenting,” he continued, “is now called neurodivergence.”
