It’s Pride Month. All sorts of corporations and businesses rush at the beginning of the month to change their profile pictures to images like rainbow flags. And then, at the end of the month, many of those same businesses take down their rainbow flag-themed profile pictures and move on as if the month never happened. Call it “rainbow-washing”—a commodification effort that doesn’t support charities or give back to the LGBTQ+ community in ways that provide sustenance and actual funding and benefits.
