It’s not “just” rainbow-colored stones that adorn Maria Quarter. The rainbow political marking in a city that completely lacks monuments to LGBTQ+ history was damaged and now the city has finally removed the painted stones that Lee Christiernsson, among others, was behind.

In addition to the stones, there have been stickers on downpipes and electrical cabinets around Maria Quarter for some time with the message “Keep Maria Queer” and those who have been lucky have passed an image with Tom of Finland’s art.

“As part of the initiative Keep Maria Queer, we are continuously exhibiting Tom of Finland in the Maria Quarter on Södermalm in Stockholm during the month of March,” Leather activist Eric Nilsson tells QX. “With the guerrilla exhibition, we want to promote visible Queerness and counteract prevailing homonormativity and self-censorship. The exhibition contrasts what is undoubtedly Stockholm’s most Queer-dense neighborhood with its heteronormative environment.”

During the month, a total of sixteen prints will be exhibited in the neighborhood. So far, Eric Nilsson and Marcin Połoch have placed four.
