Tom of Finland is the artist name of Finnish Touko Laaksonen (1920, Kaarina – 1991, Helsinki). He signed his erotic work “Tom”, and when his drawings were first published in 1957, the now world-famous “Tom of Finland” was born. “Touko Laaksonen” was kept for family and colleagues; both friends and fans have always simply called him “Tom”.
Tom of Finland’s given name was Touko – because he was born on 8th May 1920, on the southwest coast of Finland, and May in Finnish is “Toukokuu”.
The artist’s life was full of contradictions. As Touko he was honored with a Cross of Liberty for his merits in the Continuation War (1941-1944) and earned his living as a successful graphic designer and as a pianist in restaurants. At the same time, as Tom, he drew homoerotic pictures of which the imagery has reached an iconic status and is now one of best-know Finnish artists internationally.
Published for the occasion of the centenary of Tom’s birth, this book sheds light on his private life and his art in an entertaining and amusing manner, in the spirit of his joyful and pleasureful artworks.
