TOM | PUNK | 5th September | London
9th August 2013, 10:37 pm
Born in a time of economic unrest, political disillusionment and cultural complacency, punk rock burst onto the music scene in the mid 1970s with the sole purpose to shock, outrage and disturb. Its participants embraced aggressive right wing imagery, excessive latex bondage garb and politically confrontational music to create a movement capable of goading the mainstream out of mediocrity.
Nick Knight traces the images and objects which defined the punk aesthetic, and honed its legacy. Beginning with an impetus to exhibit the images that literally came to define this audacious movement – the show has its roots in photography. Limited edition prints represent the pivotal melange of musicians, personalities, places and icons, that defined the time. Alongside these authentic prints, some of which have never been released as editions before, sit original artworks including drawings by Tom of Finland that came to adorn custom made Tshirts, and rare objects that were customised or adapted by punk icons.
The exhibition features Vivienne Westwood, Malcolm McClaren, The Clash, Poly Styrene, Robert Mapplethorpe, Tom of Finland, Jamie Reid, Pennie Smith, Judy Linn, Bob Gruen, Dennis Morris, Jonh Ingham, Jon Savage, Ku Khanh, Ray Stevenson, Sheila Rock, Steve Johnston, Steve Emberton, Kate Simon.
