Interview with Pol Anglada, senior designer at Loewe

Pol Anglada, from Manlleu in Osona, is a senior designer at Loewe; he studied fashion design at the European Institute of Design in Barcelona, and, although he usually lives in Paris, he is currently in Los Angeles, doing an artist residency to explore and exploit his other talent, that of an illustrator. Osona.com and EL 9 NOU interviewed him as part of Talent Invited, a creative project dedicated to spreading the expertise of Osona men and women who are developing their professional careers abroad.

Where does the passion for fashion and drawing come from?

I was lucky to grow up in a very open family with many concerns. They always nurtured my creative side, both for the drawing part with my father and grandfather, and my grandmother for the fashion part. They’ve always activated that creative space inside my head since I was little.

When and how did you decide to study fashion design?

As a student I got very good grades, but I was very stubborn and knew what I didn’t like. I just wanted to draw and, when it came time to choose, I went to Vic to do the arts high school, although it was clear that I didn’t want to study either illustration or fine arts. I decided on fashion because it seemed the most functional point, I had an interest in this branch.

And after high school?

My family has always pushed me, and during high school I did a course at Central Saint Martins in London. Then, the European Institute of Design in Barcelona gave me a scholarship to study fashion there for three years. I have always been in a hurry: when I was a student, I wanted to work and vice versa. Every summer I looked for three-month internships to contrast and supplement information that I thought I wasn’t getting in classes or that I was getting too pedagogically. During the first year of my career I had my first job at Zara doing patterns, then doing internships in London or France. When I graduated, the opportunity came up to work in Paris, at Balmain, and I packed my bags.
