Meet Rev. Steven Johnson Leyba, artist-in-residence
12th February 2024, 3:32 pm
Rev. Steven Johnson Leyba
Reverend Steven Johnson Leyba is a ritualistic, sexual, shamanistic painter of Mescalero Apache ancestry. His art is equal parts Satanic, holistic, Queer, erotic, radical, political, and extremely personal. Utilizing various media, Leyba creates a celebration of the sacred and profane. Paint mixes with collage, beadwork, and DNA making bold, often controversial contemporary statements about the world we live in and constantly questioning the very nature of so called “civilization”, society and Art.

Leyba’s artwork is held in the collections of Vincent Price, William S. Burroughs, Stephen King, Clive Barker, David Cronenberg, H.R. Giger, Cornell University, A.I.M. (American Indian Movement), Genesis P’Orridge, Lydia Lunch, the Black Panther Party, and Tom of Finland Foundation.
