During the residency I will draw from local archives, including the Foundation’s own collection, and connect to the local Queer and fetish communities before beginning the filming process. ” – Sam Ashby

Sam Ashby is an artist based in London, UK. Ashby’s research-led practice brings historical Queer narratives to light through film, writing, and publications. His work has been presented at a number of international institutions including ICA London, LUX, BFI, Tate Modern, MoMA, MOCA, White Columns, and Light Industry. His first film The Colour of His Hair premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2017 and won the Best Documentary prize at the London Short Film Festival in 2018. The film is distributed by Criterion (US), Peccadillo Pictures (UK) and IFFR (EU). He is a recipient of Van Abbe Musuem’s Deviant Practice research grant (2018-19). His work has been supported by the Arts Council, British Council, BFI, Wellcome Trust, Elephant Trust. Ashby was an artist-in-residence at [space] (2013), Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR, 2014) and is a MacDowell Colony Fellow (2016, 2019). He is also the founder and editor of the Queer cinema journal Little Joe. A collected edition of the journal will be published by SPBH Editions in 2024.
