“Being an Artist-in-Residence at TOM House totally changed my life personally and professionally. The Program gave me the courage to be critical of my own desire and produce work that is honest to my experience as a Queer Asian artist living today. Being a part of this Foundation is like being in a big Gay family, and that is a tremendous strength.” – Oat Montien
About the performance: In this tribute for Wong Kar Wai’s masterpiece of the same name, Happy Together, Oat Montien and Zed Sheng used rope to blur the lines between Dominant and Submissive, pleasure and pain, actors and audience, physical space and social space, Masculine and Feminine, play and performance. They created a playlist of Asian songs close to their heart from artists like Faye Wong, Rasmee Isan Soul, Dengue Fever, NewJeans, then improvised a tie to each song that came up. Their performance also mixed in audio clips from Literally Gaysian podcast where Sheng spoke about the complexities of being fetishized racially, as well as clips from Montien’s exit interview with Durk Dehner where he spoke about his experience as Gay Asian artist in Los Angeles.
