The founder of Tom of Finland foundation recognizes one Finnish trait in Tom of Finland in particular

The American Tom of Finland Foundation has been in operation for 40 years. The cofounder of the Foundation, Durk Dehner, visited Helsinki.

Tom of Finland Foundation is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. With the anniversary, the Foundation’s Cofounder Durk Dehner visited Helsinki.

The idea of ​​establishing the Foundation came from visual artist Tom of Finland (1920–1991), who wanted his work to be archived and illegal copying of his drawings to be eradicated. He drew under the artist name Tom of Finland.

Dehner remembers that when he and Tom met for the first time, they recognized each other just by looking at each other, even though they hadn’t even seen a picture of each other before. Since then, Dehner became Tom’s friend and business partner.

“Tom was by no means shy, but liked meeting people. However, he was so Finnish that if there was nothing to say, it was better to remain silent.”

Dehner assures that he will continue to advance, preserve and take care of Tom of Finland’s work.

Dehner has received the medal of the Order of the Lion of Finland from President Sauli Niinistö for preserving Tom’s legacy and increasing recognition.

“I want to convey the idea that homosexuality is good. Queer art is something to celebrate and be proud of.”

Tom’s house is a commune

75-year-old Durk Dehner lives in TOM House in Los Angeles, USA.

TOM House operates on the commune principle. Artists-in-Residence are invited to the house to get to know the history of Tom of Finland.
