“I think it kind of defangs fascism,” New York City Councilman Chi Ossé said of Tom’s work. “For something that is supposed to stoke fear in our community to be repurposed in a very sexy, tongue-in-cheek way is really how you defang some of the aggressive conservatism and history we’ve seen.”

Tom of Finland’s preparatory drawings, known by the artist as “roughs,” offer a rare glimpse into the creative process behind his venerated finished works. Executed with spontaneity and confidence, these seminal studies present figures in varying stages of emergence, revealing Tom’s exceptional draftsmanship and instinctive command of form and gesture.
In contrast to the highly polished “finished” drawings, these works expose moments of experimentation—poses tested, erased, and refined—allowing collectors to witness the evolution of the aesthetic that would come to define his legacy. Merging socially sanctioned archetypes with marginalized identities, these preparatory drawings embody Tom’s revolutionary vision: The creation of confident, erotic, and aspirational Gay male figures at a time when such imagery was virtually nonexistent.
Balancing raw erotic charge with extraordinary technical skill, the preparatory drawings intimately reveal an artist who used the immediacy of pencil on paper to materialize a world of unapologetic freedom, desire, and self-affirmation.
