Meet Carlos Enfedaque, artist-in-residence

“My interests lay in the human figure and the genre of portraiture because it is the best way I have found to reflect upon concepts of ‘self’, identity, and gender, and how to play with them. In my paintings I am interested in displaying questions, hidden messages, unknown information, and unresolved narratives, which I hope make the viewer ask themselves something. My work is figurative but I’ve been deconstructing the motive in various tones. I let myself be guided by light and the way it transforms and colors the elements and bodies, transcending the motive and adding ambiguity.

“In an attempt to broaden the imagination that we all associate with Queer intimate interaction, I would like to propose what I wish I could have seen growing up as a Queer kid, creating a visual language that engages the viewer in a conversation about identity, love, and sex, questioning the limits between intimate and public, affection and violence, figuration and abstraction.” – Carlos Enfedaque

Carlos Enfedaque (b. 1994) is a Berlin-based painter from Zaragoza, Spain. He studied Fine Arts at the University of Zaragoza, the ARCA-EUAC University of Arts in Coimbra, Portugal, and the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia San Carles in Valencia, Spain, where he graduated in 2016. After finishing his Masters program in 2018, Enfedaque moved to Berlin where has been based ever since. His work has been exhibited at such venues as SETAREH Berlin, Swinton Gallery in Madrid, and Las Naves, espacio de creación contemporánea in Valencia.

Carlos’ primary medium is oil on linen. His paintings mostly consist of human figures and portraiture. His interest lies in the ambiguity of identity, playfully questioning the perception of the viewer. He believes that painting is an impulsive and intuitive act in effort to create a fresh and direct expression.
