Florian Hetz

“After having lost so much of my memory, I am creating madeleine moments with my photographic work for myself and for the viewer, to activate long lost or suppressed memories. Growing up Gay as a child, I felt I wasn’t allowed to look or stare at the things and people I desired. My work gives permission to stare, to long and desire.  – Florian Hetz

Florian Hetz is a German photographer based in Berlin.

Hetz began his photography practice to counteract the memory loss of encephalitis; initially he documented his daily life during his recovery. Gradually the process of creating this photo diary shifted toward creating photos that were based on his memories, or what he had to trust were his memories. He translated this imagery into his hyper focused, visceral language and focuses on the possibilities of the human body. And while he still works with the human body, his work moved out of the controlled environment of the studio into the outside world.

Hetz’s photography has been exhibited internationally in nine countries, and he has published three books of his work, “The Matter of Absence” (Bruno Gmünder Verlag, 2016), “ZWEI” (Paper Affairs, 2020), and “AIKO” (Paper Affairs, 2021).

Willkommen Florian!
