frank.xarate (aka Francisco Zarate, b. 1985) is a designer of visual communication and a visual artist. As a visual artist, Zarate’s process arises from the interaction between art and design, and with an ancestral background. Zarate is interested in the relationship between digital and manual techniques, the constant interplay between these approaches characterizing his work. Zarate mines concepts from various sources such as his early childhood, dreams, an image or word that activates a universe. His process of creation is never static, but rather something in constant growth and movement. Each material used has an emotional background, a meaning and a story, which Zarate uses to build his symbolic universe. Ultimately Zarate’s work explores connections that range from the foundational imagery from his childhood in Colombia, his memory of the black and indigenous peoples, deciphering his identity as an artist, and creating a visual narrative influenced by the past, yet looking to the future.
