9th July 2021, 5:19 pm
What has Tom taught us?
That we could be anything we want to be.
He gave us a whole new vocabulary of what we could be.
His life was a lesson in being the consummate Homosexual.

“To Tom, his photography was a tool he utilized as part of his practice: He used it to create his drawings. There are no accidents in Tom’s photographs – they are works of art themselves. He captured in them every line and shadow he wished in his iconic drawings. They are pure inspiration. Without them there may never have been a Tom of Finland.” –Richard Villani, Creative Director, Tom of Finland Foundation

“Thank you to model Nick Masc and Tom. There is no artist whose work is more iconic or more influential to the gay art world than Tom of Finland. Along with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, they defined the homoerotic aesthetic for their generation and have since served as inspiration for so many photographers and illustrators who’ve followed them. Though his work is almost cartoonish at times, he so realistically captured the look and underlying mood of the gay community of the time, as almost a rebellion against the closeted life most men were forced to live…And so many decades later, he still influences the gay male aesthetic. Tom’s work is timeless.” –Benjamin Veronis
“I am honored to create images based on the work of Tom of Finland, his work always been part of my life, and a lot of my work is based on his essence. I’m so thankful for the doors Tom opened for us, and at the same time sorry for the things he went through since back in the day it was illegal to create his art. I will always be thankful.” –Noel Dahl

When Tom started using models it did create one problem: He had to get actual live men to pose somehow.
